Being a Team Player in your Marriage

highfive_500Marriage works best when husband and wife work together as a team.  That's the way God designed marriage. From the beginning, God meant for the man and woman to work together.  So let's start by looking at teamwork in marriage God style!

God from the beginning of the season knew the championship belonged to him.  If I can say this, God stacked the entire team so that he can win without any doubt.  Your marriage is also stacked the same way, Matthew 19: 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh.  What therefore God hath joined together let not no man put asunder.  Sounds to me like God have all intention of winning.  Now I have eight combination of God's winning team for the perfect marriage.

The team had the right owners: in a sport, the owner of the team plays a vital role in the success of the team. In this case God, the creator and owner of this team, played the most important role of all.  He formed the team from scratch. Genesis 1: 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:

The team had the right coach: Even the best team needs a good coach and God provided such leadership in Genesis 1:26 "let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth"

The team had members of equal nature and ability: Imagine a team where everyone has the same ability, you can not have a team of quarterbacks, because everyone would be throwing the ball, you need someone to catch and run also.  In Genesis 1: 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The team had the right mandate: To be a winning team, you need to know who your opponent is and what the strategy for the winning is. And sometimes you need a good "half -time pep talk"!  God's perfect marriage team had the gauntlet laid down for them in Genesis 1: 28 "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth"

The team had the right resources: In some sports, equipment is everything. For instance, as a golfer, can imagine having only one club in your bag?  But not so with God.  In Genesis 1: 29 God said "See I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. God's team had everything it needed to play the game of life.

The team had the right leader: Whether in sports or business one person must be in charge, one CEO, one quarterback, one point guard. In the case of God's team, the man was placed in this role of leadership. Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul   He was to name the animals and in Genesis 2: 22 the woman was brought to him And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought unto him.

The team members understood their roles:
Man was the team leader.  But God, was the Owner-Coach, decided rather than have man try to do the job by himself, he could use a "helper," a wife one who would support and assist him.  In verse 18 "God said it is not good fro man to be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him" This did not make your wife any less of a player.  She was comparable to man, his counterpart, equal in standing, yet with a different role to play on the team.  Theirs was to be a leader- helper relationship.

The team members lived out theirs roles: It's one thing to know your role, but quite another to live it out.  Let's say for instance, that on my football team I was assigned the role of tackle on the team, but in my heart I really wanted to be quarterback.  This would definitely create a problem!  But on God's team, we assume that Adam knew his role and functioned in it. And being the perfect team we also assume the woman knew and functioned in perfectly in her role. In order for a husband and wife to function in their perfect roles they have to realize that even though they may be individuals they must function as one flesh a team in order to win.

Three things that caused a perfect marriage to suffer:

The team members were separated: The woman was alone with her teammate and tea leader.
There was a formidable opponent: The serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field.
The woman took on the opponent alone without her teammate: And as the saying goes the rest is history
